A man in his 50s was taken to hospital this morning with moderately serious injuries after a fall at Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC).

Emergency services staff were called to the dry dock at the port after the man fell at about 10.36am.

An LPC spokeswoman said the man was an independent contractor but the circumstances of the accident were unclear at present.

"It appears he sustained a fall while in the dry dock area,'' she said.

In June a Lyttelton worker died when a mooring rope broke.
